The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) invites applications for the position of Science Infrastructure and Operations Manager (SIOM). PPPL is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
PPPL is engaged in a period of programmatic diversification and growth with an expanding research portfolio and substantial investment in new facilities and infrastructure upgrades. A critical element of this activity is translating the requirements for scientific capability into the features, design, and functionality of both new and existing infrastructure.
The Science Infrastructure and Operations Manager (SIOM) will establish the scientific infrastructure and associated engineering priorities consistent with PPPL scientific goals and available funding, and will coordinate the definition, implementation, distribution, and operation of office, collaboration, and laboratory spaces among the user programs. The SIOM will also ensure that program objectives are achieved as defined by senior lab management and that project development is executed efficiently and effectively to achieve the PPPL mission.
The SIOM will also serve as a project manager for associated science infrastructure and operations projects as requested.

Serve as a single point of contact (POC) for science end users throughout the lifecycle of various projects to:
Define programmatic, space, and utilities requirements, and testing and commissioning requirements to inform the basis of design, general requirements documents (GRDs), room datasheets, etc. and to review and coordinate reviews by the science end user of design and construction documentation to ensure the requirements are accurately captured and planned for.
Have the authority to answer on behalf of science users, mediate uncertainties and/or conflicts in requirements, and to escalate issues to upper management for resolution as needed.
Consult with project team(s) as needed to ensure that implementation plans and procedures are consistent with science requirements.
Be fully integrated with Project and A/E design teams (Project Manager, ESH, QA, F&SS, Procurement, A/E, GC etc.) throughout the lifecycle of the project including: programming, design and design backcheck, construction and submittal/RFI review, first in place inspections and walkthroughs, commissioning planning and implementation, transition to science operations planning and implementation during initial design phases and especially the programming phase of design in support of the construction project manager.
Work with other project manager(s) to update implementation plans and procedures in the event that project scope is adjusted prior to project baselining.
Work closely with science leadership to ensure that implementation plans and procedures remain aligned with science objectives during project construction and operations.
Assist or lead the development of infrastructure plans for systems that will be incorporated beyond initial building construction or upgrade - including future piping, project/experiment related infrastructure, etc.
Coordinate reviews and manage associated documents. For example, the SIOM will coordinate reviews of drawings, design reports and contract documents, requests for information, submittals, commissioning reports, potential change orders, value engineering efforts, contingency spend down prioritization, etc and will document responses to provide projects with final consolidated responses and approvals.
Provide regular communication of project status to the science end users and assist in communication and coordination of utilities shut down or major logistical change planning (e.g. building systems not available, parking, path of egress, etc.)
Works with department heads and group leaders to develop implementation plans for moving people and equipment as needed; Coordinates with stakeholders to develop and implement plans for satellite projects required to complete laboratory hookup that will result from moving people and equipment.
Serve as a technical advisor to support researchers in the development of proposals and estimates for research proposals
When assigned, serves as a project manager for research projects:
Works closely with facilities, engineering, and research departments
Guides projects through increasing levels of design maturity (pre-conceptual to final)
Establishes progressively accurate cost, schedule, staffing, and risk estimates
Oversees project execution including safety, risk, scope, cost schedule, and quality
Engages stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify hazards, potential environmental impacts and coordinates the development of plans and controls for their mitigation
Acquires internal and external resources and effectively manages project resources
Provides project direction, oversight and feedback to assigned supporting project staff
Achieves project requirements including, milestones, performance and technical requirements, and key performance parameters.
Closely tracks project performance and identifies project issues and adverse trends and implements timely and effective recovery plan(s) as needed. Employs Earned Value Management (EVM) as applicable to measure project performance
Provides reports and frequent communication regarding project status and performance to the Project Management Office (PMO) and project stakeholders including obstacles and resource needs and potential process improvements necessary to overcome obstacles
Where applicable, oversees project closeout including turnover to end user/operations and disposition of documents and records
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field required (Science, Engineering, Architecture/Lab Planning);
Advanced Degree (PhD or Masters) in related field preferred.
Minimum of ten (10) years of related work experience managing and developing a portfolio of complex laboratory spaces and through all phases of project development.
Past experience in a complex laboratory/pharma environment required;
Past experience in Governmental, DOE, or University setting preferred.
Past experience understanding and interpreting design and construction drawings and documents.

Demonstrated team building skills, including the ability to work effectively with peers, other organizations, project sponsors and stakeholders and suppliers.
Demonstrated ability to manage a broad range of work activities and technical disciplines involving a diverse spectrum of professional and non-professional personnel.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Excellent Computer skills (PC/Mac)
Proficient knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite or equivalent including: Word, Powerpoint, Excel & advanced excel functions.
Understands planning, architecture and project management tools and software
Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues across departments to ensure effective and efficient use of the personnel and financial resources to deliver high quality research work and broader program targets.
Demonstrated ability to Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.
Aptitude to lead discussions with clients in all phases of project development
Experience w/ micro electronics, quantum information science (QIS), and/or pulse power preferred
Proficient with the Google Suite including: Google Slides, Google Docs/Google Sheets
Certificates and Licenses:
Professional Engineer Certification or Architectural Licensure desired
LEED Accredited Professional desired
No unique requirements – job responsibilities limited to office work and occasional field walk-throughs. Work will be primarily remote during Pandemic conditions, but, will transition to full time onsite (both office and in the field) as health conditions improve.
Job requirements will be fulfilled from PPPL site. Occasional teleworking may be approved as needed.
