Candidates for this position are expected to exhibit potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to develop a high quality, externally funded research program, as well as teach and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Alabama invites applications for two (2) tenure-track Assistant Professorships, to start August 2023, in experimental condensed matter physics and/or materials-based machine learning, with a focus on materials spectroscopy and imaging.
Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) optical/near-field/Raman, ARPES, synchrotron x-ray, neutron, STEM, and/or Auger/CL/PL spectroscopies. Machine learning and high throughput materials discovery and property prediction is also of interest, as is any other effort that fits synergistically with experimental efforts. Applicants who can leverage our 2023 acquisition of a Spectra 300 TEM with EELS and Lorentz capabilities are of high interest. Priority will be given to candidates with unique characterization techniques that complement existing expertise. Applicants whose research will leverage national laboratory research facilities are encouraged to apply.
Candidates must hold a doctorate in an appropriate field, demonstrated ability to conduct outstanding research relative to their experience and opportunities, and show promise for excellence in teaching. The successful candidate is expected to develop a high quality, externally funded research program, as well as teach and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants with academic, industrial, or government experience are encouraged to apply.
Review of applications will begin January 15, 2023. Applications should be submitted online at http://facultyjobs.ua.edu/postings/51368 and include a curriculum vitae, publication list, 4-page research statement including startup budget, and 2-page teaching/mentoring statement. Candidates should arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be sent electronically to search committee chair Prof. Adam Hauser at ahauser@ua.edu.
