The Department of Physics of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for several tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level. An applicant must possess a PhD degree in physics or related field and provide evidence of strong research productivity. Appointment at Associate Professor level or above will also be considered for candidates with exceptional records of research excellence and academic leadership.
We seek experimental candidates inquantum matter and quantum information, including quantum and low-dimensional materials, materials with strong electronic correlations, cold atoms, quantum optics, and quantum enabled technologies. The theoretical areas targeted are quantum science (preferably with a focus on atomic, molecular, or optical methods), statistical physics, neural networks, and data analytics. Candidates are also sought in experimental and theoretical wave functional materials and soft and living matter.
Appointees are expected to assume teaching responsibilities for undergraduate and graduate courses, and to conduct vigorous research programs. Further information about the Department is available at http://physics.ust.hk.
Starting salary will be highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including medical and dental benefits, annual leave and housing benefits will be provided where applicable. The initial appointment prior to tenure will normally be on three-year contract terms. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of a contract.
Application Procedure: Applicants should submit their application including CV, cover letter, complete publication list, research statement, teaching statement, and three reference letters, via AcademicJobsOnline.org at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/16290. Please quote reference number “PHYS2509” in your application materials. Screening of applications begins immediately, and will continue until the positions are filled.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a dynamic, young research university with a diverse international faculty and student body who relentlessly pursue excellence in teaching and research. Situated on the hillside overlooking scenic Clear Water Bay at the eastern edge of Hong Kong and the southeastern coast of China, HKUST has rapidly established itself as a leading institution on the academic world map since it was founded in 1991. The Department of Physics offers rigorous and competitive undergraduate and postgraduate programs in physics. Currently, we have over 180 undergraduate students and over 175 postgraduate students. 16 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze medalists of IPhO (International Physics Olympiad) and APhO (Asian Physics Olympiad) from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macao, Turkmenistan, Nepal, Mongolia, India, Vietnam and Indonesia had joined our department since 2013. The Department has 37 full-time faculty members (21 experimentalists and 16 theorists) with significant expertise in the areas of Cold Atoms, Optics and Quantum Information, Condensed Matter Experiments and Advanced Materials, Condensed Matter Theory, Statistical and Computational Phys...ics, Particle Physics and Cosmology, Soft Matter and Biological Physics, Wave Functional Materials and Physics. Among our faculty members, 13 of them are Fellows of American Physics Society and one of them is Nobel laureate, Professor George F Smoot, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006, and the other is Professor Kam-Biu Luk who won the Breakthrough Prize in 2016. The Department has a large collection of the state-of-the-art research equipment for laser physics, photonics, quantum materials and physics, surface/interface studies, solid state properties, polymers and liquid crystals, nanostructured layers and clusters, and nonlinear dynamics. A number of central service facilities and interdisciplinary research institutes provide support for the Department's research programs. Particularly relevant are the Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility (MCPF) and the Nanosystem Fabrication Facility (NFF). Our faculty works on focused topic and interdisciplinary research through several research institutes and centers.
