THE EAST AFRICAN INSTITUTE FOR FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH
The EAIFR is an ICTP Partner Institute with a UNESCO Category 2 status based in Kigali at the University of Rwanda (UR) (see https://eaifr.ictp.it/about/). The institute was created in 2018 with a view to position itself as a leading research and training institute in Eastern Africa in the broad area of theoretical and applied physics. The institute currently runs a vibrant program consisting of in-house full-time research faculty, PhD students and students enrolled in a 2-year Masters program in Physics. Since its inception, EAIFR has hosted visiting scientists from around the globe and run numerous workshops and schools.

OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Under the supervision of the Director, the incumbent will undertake research in different areas of physical sciences (including but not limited to: solid-earth geophysics, condensed matter physics, high energy physics/cosmology and mathematical physics), organizing training programs for students and researchers from all over Africa, and will assist and teach in the Masters programmes. Essential responsibilities include:
Organise short courses, workshops, conferences, meetings etc. that are held by the Institute alone or in collaboration with other international bodies, especially the ICTP.
Carry out frontline research in their respective fields.
Teach at least two courses per annum in the Masters programme at the highest standard.
Supervise students and postdoctoral fellows at the institute.
Participate in the organization of the Masters programme in Physics.
Actively participate in the development and running of a Ph.D. programme in Physics
Interface with research staff of the College of Science at UR and with the ICTP.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
PhD. in Physics or a related field.
Work Experience:
At least 4 years of relevant professional experience after obtaining the doctorate (2 years of which in an international environment is an asset).
Experience in lecturing and organizing training activities. (this experience in a developing country is an asset).
Experience in supervising and mentoring young scientists.
Candidates with experience in the use of high-performance computing and/or data-science approaches in their research are strongly encouraged to apply.
Skills/Competencies:
Ability to work in a multicultural environment as part of a team.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English.
BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS
The entry level of the post (Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor or Professor) is subject to evaluation. On successfully completing a probationary period of six months, this post becomes a permanent position (the recipient gets a contract from UR renewable every three years). The net annual remuneration depends on the actual post and will be $36,000 for Senior Lecturer, $42,000 for Associate Professor and $48,000 for Professor. RAMA medical insurance is provided. All EAIFR Faculty members are automatically offered an ICTP Associateship which supports research visits to the ICTP (https://www.ictp.it/sti/associates-programme).
