The Department of Physics at Duquesne University invites applications for a non-tenure-track position in physics at the Teaching Assistant Professor level, for the academic year 2023-24. We are seeking a dynamic individual with a genuine commitment to teaching, excellent interpersonal skills and strong qualifications to teach experimental skills to undergraduate physics majors in preparation for industrial jobs and graduate studies. We have seven faculty members and between 25 and 35 students (all years). We have a commitment to implement Physics Education Research (PER) in our curriculum. Most students participate in the research programs onsite and many travel to national labs for summer internships. This is a position with full responsibility for the experimental sequence in the physics major: first-year labs and beyond the first year, including optics lab and advanced lab. This sequence is intentionally synergistic with the experimental research programs of the faculty in the areas of nuclear physics, atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics and materials science. The successful candidate will receive encouragement and support to participate in advanced-lab conferences to stay current with trends in physics education. Overseeing the maintenance of instructional equipment and advising the department chair in all equipment issues are part of the responsibilities. The ideal candidate would hold a PhD in an area of applied physics with strong electronics and optics components, be familiar with PER, and would also have experience in an industrial setting. Alternatively, a combination of experiences amounting to equivalent qualifications will serve as well. Engineers with no formal physics background but with a strong interest in educating physics majors are also welcome to apply.
Duquesne University uses Interfolio to collect all faculty job applications electronically. Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three confidential references to: https://apply.interfolio.com/121685. While the position will remain open until filled, priority will be given to applications received by March 25, 2023. For more information please contact Simonetta Frittelli at frittelli@duq.edu.
