University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Department of Physics invites applications for a long-term, non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Lecturer beginning Fall 2023. This is a nine-month, academic year position.
The successful candidate will teach the introductory physics course sequences for life scientists and for scientists and engineers, and general education offerings. The successful candidate will supervise and train the graduate teaching assistants assigned to these courses. Further, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in or lead initiatives to improve the success of all students, particularly in our gateway offerings, and to engage in service to the Physics department and the institution.
Expectations include a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely-related field, experience teaching introductory physics, and a demonstrated commitment to improving student success.
UMBC is a dynamic public research university (R1) integrating teaching, research and service. The department and the university provide a wide range of faculty development opportunities, and support for pedagogical innovation and the scholarship of teaching and learning. UMBC is located in the Baltimore suburbs, 15 minutes from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and 30 minutes from Washington D.C., in an area with a high concentration of federal and private research laboratories and research universities. The Department of Physics currently consists of 21 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 6 research faculty, 3 full-time lecturers, 54 PhD students and 120 undergraduate majors. The department offers a BS in Physics, a BA in Physics for Secondary Education, and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics and in Atmospheric Physics.
