Postdoctoral Fellow - 95778
Division: AA-Accelerator Tech-Applied Phys
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Accelerator Tech-Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will join the Fusion Science and Ion Beam Technology Program in the ATAP Division working on neutron-scattering based carbon measurement in soil. You will have a good understanding of nuclear physics, specifically coincidence gamma-ray detection using Lanthanum-Bromide or Sodium-Iodide detectors, all-digital readout electronics, data acquisition and processing using python.
You will work with scientists and engineers in our Program at Berkeley Lab to design, implement, and use a novel instrument to measure carbon distributions in agricultural soils. A lab-based prototype system exists that has been developed over the last three years. Your main goal will be to further improve this system and undertake experiments in a field setting here at LBNL. You will also work closely together with scientists and engineers from the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area.
What You Will Do:
- Collaborate on experiments, working closely with LBNL scientists, engineers, other Postdocs and students.
- Communicate results through internal reports, internal and external presentations.
- Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed journal publications and oral presentations.
- Proactively promote and participate in matters relating to safety and environmentally sensitive work practices.
- Adhere to Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) policies and attend training classes as required.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- Along with senior project team members, may mentor undergraduate and graduate students and visitors.
What is Required:
- Recent Ph.D. degree in physics or related field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas:
- Experience conducting inelastic neutron scattering experiments.
- Experience with all-digitial readout electronics (coincidence measurements, etc.).
- Experience with MCNP or Geant4 simulations toolkits to simulate the experiment.
- Experience with python (numpy, pandas, scipy, ...) to analyze data and control the experiment.
- Ability to work independently.
- Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.
- Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of FPGA programming.
- Knowledge of basic soil science and different soil types.
- Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and visitors.
Notes:
- This is a full-time 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
