Physical Review Materials is looking for a part-time Associate Editor with international scientific standing in the broad area of materials research. As a member of our editorial team, you would actively engage with the materials research community and ensure an outstanding peer review experience and thoughtful selection of papers.
Physical Review Materials is a broad-scope journal publishing high-quality research on all aspects of materials research. The journal serves the multidisciplinary community working on the prediction, synthesis, processing, structure, properties, and modeling of a wide range of materials. It provides a publication and reference venue to the expanding community of physicists, materials scientists, chemists, engineers, and scientists in related disciplines, carrying out high-quality, original research in the materials arena.
The primary responsibility of the Associate Editor is to critically conduct the peer review process of assigned manuscripts by determining whether to send a manuscript out for external review, selecting appropriate reviewers, and making decisions on rejection or acceptance. The Associate Editor is expected to expand the existing ties between the journal and the materials community, and to raise the journal’s overall visibility, through various activities, including conference attendance.
We receive submissions continuously throughout the year, and so we expect editors to work on their assignments on a regular basis; arrangements can be made for extended absences upon timely prior notice. Active participation in our regular editorial discussions is also expected. The Associate Editor would be appointed as a consultant and would receive compensation for their work on an hourly basis.
The part-time Associate Editor is expected and encouraged to maintain their current position – be it in academia, industry, or another sector - while contributing to Physical Review Materials. Candidates must have an outstanding track record in both research and in refereeing, and have a broad knowledge of the field and current trends within it. They should also hold high standards for peer review, and be committed to building an exceptional reputation for the journal. Prior editorial experience is not required. Researchers from anywhere in the world may apply.
Interested applicants should write to edsearch@aps.org with a cover letter and a current CV. Applicants should also summarize—in writing or via a video clip—their perspective on peer review and the aims and direction of Physical Review Materials.. The deadline to apply is July 1.
