The Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics (APAM) at Columbia University in the City of New York invites applications for a Staff Associate II. This position will be responsible for all aspects of the Applied Physics Teaching Laboratory, Plasma Physics Laboratory and Machine Shop. The Staff Associate will assist faculty the setup of the High Beta Tokamak, which is associated with laboratory course. Duties involve but are not limited to:
Provide technical assistance and advice to users on specimen preparation, operation of the instruments and interpretation of data, provide advice and assistance and/or assign an appropriate subordinate or trained user to meet requests of users that have not been trained, operate appropriate instruments, obtain and interpret data in accordance with specific requests from users, provide tours and demonstrations of the Laboratory in assistance to faculty, departmental, school and university programs; Train students on laboratory equipment, prepare user training documents, monitor usage, maintain user records and prepare for the set up for classes; Monitor the performance of equipment, perform routine maintenance, perform repairs and/or coordinate service calls from instrument manufacturers; With minimal supervision, can investigate and maintain suite of applied physics experiments for AP teaching lab; Responsible for safety management of radiation, chemicals, high voltage, heavy equipment, machine shop, and general laboratory conditions; Other related duties as assigned
This position requires a high degree of independent judgement in this position with weekly meetings with the Principal Investigators. The Staff Associate II will conduct experiments, and analyze data and present recommendations while performing data analysis for the purposes of product and process development. The Staff Associate II will operate the lab machinery and work with users in analyzing the data retrieved.

Qualifications Bachelors degree in Mathematics, Physics or other related field required. Must have at least four year of professional research experience. Knowledge of High Beta Tokamak or similar device.
