The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The Accelerator Safety Specialist for the Collider-Accelerator Department will help develop and maintain engineered personnel protection programs for accelerator facility operations and research. The Accelerator Safety Specialist will report to the Environmental, Safety, Security, Health & Quality (ESSHQ) Division Head. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform calculations to determine shielding requirements in order to estimate induced radioactivity and estimation of dose to personnel and environment
Analyze and interpret radiation physics measurements to characterize the radiation field for personnel and equipment protection as required
Review accelerator designs to identify and specify shielding requirements to ensure staff is protected from stray radiation fields
Provide support for safe radiological operations during commissioning/operations of the accelerators by developing procedures, reports and establishing protocols in conjunction with other cognizant ESH personnel at BNL
Support the BNL Radiological protection program through implementation of institutional and Departmental procedures, policies and work practices developed to keep dose to staff and the public ALARA
Provide independent oversight of the C-AD Access Control System engineered interlock systems, e.g. review of state tables, test results and electrical schematics
Prepare and update safety basis documentation for new and existing accelerator facilities in the C-AD complex
Bachelor’s degree in radiation protection, electrical engineering, or physics
A minimum of 10 years’ full-time relevant experience, including 5 years of progressive experience in line positions of increasing responsibility
A minimum of two years’ experience in radiation/particle physics simulations to perform shielding, dose and activation calculations
Experience in a technical organization related to ionizing radiation safety and hazard analysis
Technically proficient in the areas of safety analysis, industrial safety, radiation safety and radiological protection, hazard identification
Strong interpersonal skills along with clear and concise oral and written communication skills
Ability to effectively present on the results of calculations and measurements in the form of written reports and presentations
Ability to interact effectively with personnel and possess a high level of confidence
Knowledge of Microsoft Office including spreadsheet development and database management
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge and experience with electrical schematics and logic diagrams
Extensive knowledge and experience working within the DOE complex
Master’s/Ph.D. in Radiation/Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Accelerator Physics or in closely related fields
3 + years’ experience working in an accelerator environment including performing shielding/activation analyses and measurement of complex radiation fields
Peer reviewed published work in radiation physics calculations and measurements
Excellent skills in areas such as technical and interpersonal leadership and communication with diverse staff
Experience related to safety PLCs, engineered interlock systems, ladder logic, electrical schematics, and state tables in an accelerator facility or similar science and technology facility
Certified Health Physicist (CHP)
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Ability to walk distances in excess of ½ mile
Ability to climb vertical ladders
Ability to be in areas of magnetic fields in excess of 5 gauss
Valid Drivers’ License
