We have an opening for a Chemical Technologist who will become a core member of an interdisciplinary team working on fabrication of complex articles called targets in support of the High Energy Density Physics and other national security programs. Targets represent the essential elements to be studied in sophisticated experiments on these high energy laser systems; their vast variety and stringent requirements continually raise many interesting fabrication and assembly challenges whose resolution requires a combination of materials & mechanical engineering and metrology science. You will be responsible for performing experimental work for evolving new processes, refining and troubleshooting existing ones, and for testing and characterization of the resultant samples. This position is in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Optics & Target Materials group of the Materials Science Division.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
Serve as the primary hands-on technical driver for developing a variety of moderately complex to complex processes and executing detailed experiments with comprehensive documentation of the procedures that meet all the requisite safety standards.
Conduct extensive characterization of the product using a variety of techniques and collate all data in databases.
Responsible for setting up, organizing, and performing experiments to help corelate multi-parameter results and following up with data analysis to extract relevant trends.
Perform maintenance and upkeep of the equipment and measurement instrumentation, as well as commissioning of new systems per needs of the program.
Gain proficiency of operating software to be able to rapidly problem-solve and implement updates to stay current with industry standards.
Maintain comprehensive records and databases and prepare written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results as well as periodic progress reports.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities at the SES.3 level
Provide advanced technical solutions to complex problems which may not be well defined, lead projects under minimal direction, and independently resolve technical objectives.
Collaborate with technical area leaders, project leaders, and program management to represent technical capabilities and project results to internal management and external sponsors.
Develop ways to continually update, improve and refine fabrication and characterization technologies using latest technical advances described in literature.
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
BS in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Experience with characterization using advanced microscopy such as confocal, surface characterization techniques, e.g., Atomic Force Microscopy and interferometry, spectroscopy, thin film measurements.
Broad experience with working in a chemical lab with emphasis on process development/improvement and commissioning new systems.
Ability to perform hands-on work in a fast-paced laboratory in compliance to all safety requirements.
Experience with automated data acquisition and computer interfacing
Proven track-record of being detail-oriented, developing meticulous protocols and delivering in a high consequence of error environment, with the ability to analyze and present moderately complex to complex multi-parameter data.
Experience working within a scientific team as well as working independently.
Proficient written and verbal communication skills necessary document research results, and to prepare and present proposals, papers, and reports to internal and external audiences.
Additional qualifications at the SES.3 Level
Significant experience in chemical labs with an objective of developing real-world products with demanding requirements. Significant experience working independently with the ability to provide technical leadership to guide projects to completion.
Advanced knowledge and comprehension of overall project goals to develop new directions and deliver enhanced solutions.
Qualifications We Desire
Familiarity with software such as Labview or Matlab or equivalent.
