The Instrument Research and Development group at RMD has an opening for an early career staff scientist. The research group utilizes recent developments in radiation detection materials from other research groups at RMD to develop advanced instrumentation. This includes developing the instrument hardware, firmware, and software for advanced systems that include nuclear detection and imaging. The research group has developed instruments for terrestrial applications, as well instruments for deploying to space and lunar orbit. As part of developing new technologies for nuclear instruments, the research team is pursuing the development of the next generation of solid-state photomultipliers, which will surpass silicon photomultipliers. The group also develops optical instrumentation for nuclear detection, atmospheric sciences, and monitoring a patient’s health. Projects involve the characterization of semiconductor devices, readout electronics, and the development of instrumentation systems composed of sensors, electronics, computers, and software. The application of machine learning to the analysis of data has become increasingly important in recent years, and even a modest background in the field would be preferred. The person selected for this position will provide support on existing programs, while contributing to bidding on new research programs, and should have an interest in a diverse number of fields.
Qualifications & Experience of Interest
A BS, MS, or equivalent in Physics or in a related field,
Hands-on experience in electronics, spectroscopy, optics, and/or lasers,
Experience with semiconductor device testing,
Software skills of interest: machine learning, C++, Python, ROOT, MATLAB
Experience with nuclear instruments and methods,
Digital signal processing and microprocessor-based system integration,
Strong analytical, technical and problem-solving skills,
Strong communication skill in technical writing.
