The Quantum Sensing & Defect Discovery and Spectroscopy lab at the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL) seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate for projects in using optically detected magnetic resonance platforms based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond and other defects in silicon carbide (SiC), integrated to cryogenic and microwave-electronics equipment, for quantum sensing. This is a highly multidisciplinary project that combines techniques from quantum optics, magneto-optics, optical microscopy (confocal, far-field), and materials science. The goal is to use ultra-sensitive quantum sensors, operating at variable temperatures and magnetic fields, to study exotic magnetic and optical phenomena in low-dimensional materials, for quantum spintronics, nanophotonics, and quantum information processing applications.
The postdoc will apply techniques from quantum optics, magnetic resonance, and optical spectroscopy to emerging new fields; Learn semiconductor and magnetic device nanofabrication techniques in world-class cleanrooms (NCMN, Argonne, Sandia); collaborate with partners in academia (UNL, Japan Advanced Institute of Science Technology, ANU.), and Industry (IMEC, ODMR technologies Inc.); Participate in national/international conferences/workshops and attend training sessions; Mentor students.
This position is funded by NSF for up to 5 years. A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related field is required. Experience in optical spectroscopy, microscopy, cryogenics, and/or nanofabrication (EBL or optical lithography) is highly recommended. Strong background in programming (LabView, Python, MATLAB, etc.) is very desired. Experience in working with color centers/defects in diamond/wide bandgap semiconductors or quantum optics is also helpful.
