The Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office (FDAO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking a Division Head for the Fluid Dynamics Division (FDD). The Division Head reports to the Deputy Director, Head of the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office. The Division Head, along with immediate reports, will develop and mature business relationships and programs with other ARL offices, industry, and government.
The FDD head will provide organizational leadership to the FDD to include personnel management, recruitment, development, and retention of FDD employees.
Basic and applied research with emphasis on analytical and experimental fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics, turbomachinery design and testing, and advanced flow diagnostics and testing.
Specific areas of research include but are not limited to: undersea vehicle hydrodynamics, propulsion and hydrodynamic turbomachinery design, low and high Reynolds number testing, cavitation, drag reduction, bio-fluid dynamics and biomedical devices, nuclear thermal-hydraulics, multi-phase flows, rotor-craft aerodynamics and marine renewable energy.
Higher level responsibilities include:
Plan and direct research projects that have substantial impact that extends knowledge and understanding; plan, organize, and supervise the work of staff scientists, engineers and technicians.
Coordinate research and development activities between disciplines involving exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches.
Devise plan and lead work on extremely complex problems that impact the design success of current products or addresses broad design issues of future products or technologies.
Propose and lead new initiatives; guide programs of national or international significance; identify future problems, research trends and opportunities and direct and/or participate in major proposal preparation and presentation.
Participate and contribute to the strategic plan of the unit.
Mentor assigned staff in the development of technical, project, and business development skills.
This position will be filled as a level 4 or level 5 depending upon the successful candidate's education and experience. Typically requires a Master's Degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline plus ten years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.
This position will be as either a Research and Development Engineer or Research Faculty.
Required skills and experience includes:
At least two years of proven supervisory experience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
Preferred skills and experience includes:
A Master's degree required (PhD preferred) in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics, or other Thermal-Fluid Sciences related discipline
Possession of an active Secret (Top Secret desired) clearance
