RIKEN's research is based on synthesis and interdisciplinarity, and with free thinking as its basic philosophy, RIKEN promotes research that goes beyond the boundaries of conventional research fields, while at the same time responding to the needs of society from a strategic perspective.
RIKEN invites applications for the position of Laboratory Head (indefinite-term employment position) to serve in a leadership position in the following research area. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing research projects from a medium-to-long-term perspective.
The RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science (RNC) hosts the RI Beam Factory (RIBF) and the RIKEN BNL Research Center (RBRC), and has made world-leading research accomplishments such as the discovery of new neutron-rich nuclei, the discovery of the element Nihonium (113), and the measurement of the temperature of the quark-gluon plasma. The current research activities in RNC include the origin of the heavy elements in the Universe, searching for new stable nuclei, nuclear properties under extreme conditions inside compact stars, nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. The RNC aims to elucidate the fundamental principles to govern matter in the Universe and also to link the knowledge to the intellectual and technological advancement of humankind.
Field: Nuclear theory in a broad sense Physicist who leads theoretical researches in nuclear physics at RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science (RNC) and builds international and domestic collaborations between experimental and theoretical activities as well as nurtures young researchers.
October 1, 2021 or the earliest opportunity after this date.
Noon, February 15, 2021 (Japan Standard Time)
Upon appointment, RNC will allocate funding for the start-up of the laboratory, including start-up costs and personnel costs.

About RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science
RIKEN is Japan's largest comprehensive research institution renowned for high-quality research in a diverse range of scientific disciplines. Founded in 1917 as a private research foundation in Tokyo, RIKEN has grown rapidly in size and scope, today encompassing a network of world-class research centers and institutes across Japan.
The Nishina Center operates the RI Beam Factory (RIBF), the world's highest performing heavy ion accelerator facility where radioisotopes that do not exist in nature are artificially created.
The Nishina Center promotes researches on the synthesis of superheavy elements with one prime example being nihonium, researches in the fields of magic numbers, nucleosynthesis in the universe, and reducing radioactive waste, as well as theoretical research linking these fields. The RIBF is also utilized for medical, agricultural, and IT purposes such as nuclear medicine, breeding, and semiconductor developments.
