Computer Science: Artificial Intelligence, Engineering and Technology: Materials, Physics: Materials
REU students will be introduced to the field of Materials Informatics and learn how to apply the tools of artificial intelligence to create novel materials with preferred characteristics. Our program offers a combination of formal education based on a cutting edge curriculum developed by faculty in the UB Department of Materials Design and Innovation, hands-on training and professional development. We will prepare a future generation of materials scientists who are fluent in both materials science and information science.
The internship also includes a scientific communications workshop, educational seminars and social activities. At the end of the 10-week program, students present their research results to the group. Internships will run from June 1, 2021 to August 6, 2021. The REU program will cover flights to and from the internship location in Buffalo, N.Y. and housing in the University at Buffalo dormitories for the summer if we are able to hold on-site activities.
In the event that we are unable to host an on-site program, we are prepared to hold a virtual internship. This will include remote training and individualized research projects.
Program Highlights - A $6,000 stipend in addition to housing and travel expenses. - An authentic full-time research experience with hands-on training. - Regular workshops on scientific presentation skills throughout the summer. - Seminars on current research and introductory courses on data-driven approaches, materials science, and python for machine learning. - Professional development activities, career mentoring, and social events. - Networking with leading researchers, scientists and educators through workshops and conferences, including the Erich Bloch Symposium hosted by the Department of Materials Design and Innovation.
Eligibility All applicants should be interested in pursuing a career in research and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Women and minorities underrepresented in STEM and non-research focused institutions are strongly encouraged to apply. No prior research experience required.
Additional Salary Information: Stipend is based on participation in the 10 week program and is in addition to travel reimbursement and housing. In the event that we are not able to hold on-site events, a stipend may still be provided.
