The Biomedical Engineering Department and Center for Biomedical Informatics offer several summer research opportunities focusing on Imaging and Mechanics-based Projects on Accidental Cases of Trauma (IMPACT) and other biomedical engineering and informatics topics. This 10 week summer research opportunity offers experiential training in an outstanding research environment with a highly talented academic team. Students selected for our program experience hands-on research training, mentorship and teamwork, professional development activities and scientific dissemination.
Our program admits up to 40 students each summer who meet the following eligibility requirements:
Undergraduate students from all institutions - including community colleges - we encourage applicants who are freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Students in good academic standing [3.0 GPA and above].
Underrepresented students from colleges with limited research opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are encouraged to apply.
This is a highly competitive program and applicants are selected based on personal scholarship and academic interest with those of participating researchers.
The Wake Forest School of Medicine Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a basic science program within the School of Medicine. BME is also a prominent track within the graduate school, with 45 students, nearly one fourth of the graduate school in the School of Medicine. BME has 11 primary faculty, 27 core faculty, and 14 affiliate faculty at WFU with about $20 million in research funding per year at WFUBMC. The Department is also a member of the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences which draws from faculty, staff and students at both schools. Overall, the program has 78 faculty and 93 students with 14 partner centers and institutes.
