The University of Alabama (UA) REU, Engineering Sensors Systems and Signal Processing for Speech Pathology, is a collaborative research experience between the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Communicative Disorders. This multidisciplinary program runs from May through July and offers research opportunities for 9 students from UA and other institutions across the nation. Students in all areas of engineering, computer science, and related fields are encouraged to apply.

Available research projects will allow participants to work on interdisciplinary problems requiring image analysis, sensor design, algorithm development, and information processing to support research in speech pathology. Speech language pathology is an applied behavioral science whose scope of practice includes screening, assessment, treatment, and technology/instrumentation related to the areas of fluency, speech production, language, cognition, voice, resonance, feeding and swallowing, and auditory habilitation/rehabilitation.

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its possessions
  • Be unemployed or in an inactive status in any position held during the ten-week program
  • Be and remain an undergraduate student in good standing
  • Plan to complete a degree program

Requirements

  • Commit at least 40 hours per week to REU activities
  • Participate in professional development workshops (e.g. Networking, writing graduate school applications, resume/CV building, designing posters for conferences), research seminars, and technical workshops (MATLAB programming, Sensor training, Anatomy reviews)
  • Participate in shadowing experiences at the Speech and Hearing Center on campus to understand how clinicians and patients interact, learn clinical practices, and the needs of clinicians and patients.
  • Participate in cultural activities with REU cohort (e.g. trips to U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, National Memorial for Peace and Justice)
  • Participate in social activities with REU cohort and Speech Language Pathology students at UA (e.g. Summer BBQs)
