Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Tennessee. The successful applicant will carry out interdisciplinary materials research that touches on a wide range of topics such as correlated electron systems, topological states, spintronics, multiferroics, and ultrafast dynamics. The focus of his/her research will be on atomically engineered quantum condensed matter systems, with emphasis on complex oxide heterostructures. The successful applicant will synthesize artificial layered materials with pulsed laser deposition and characterize these heterostructures with a suite of analytical tools including resonant x-ray scattering/spectroscopy, magnetometry, magneto-transport, photoemission, scanning tunneling microscopy, ferromagnetic resonance, etc. Research will be performed at the newly completed facility of the Joint Institute of Advanced Materials (JIAM), a joint venture between the University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which provides a stimulating and interactive research environment.
Applicants should have a PhD in physics or closely related field. Prior experience with one or several of the above techniques is desired. Experience with programming software, such as Labview and MATLAB, will also be a plus. The applicant should possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and should be strongly self-motivated and eager to work with others in the highly collaborative research environment that JIAM offers.
