We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform research in the area of fireball physics and nuclear weapon effects. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team that is reanalyzing the high-speed films of the 210 atmospheric nuclear tests performed in the 1940's, 50's, and early 1960's. The goal of this project is to extract benchmark data from the films and use these data to validate high-fidelity computer codes that simulate a variety of nuclear weapon effects such as shockwave effects, thermal pulse effects, and nuclear fallout. This position is within the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Science Division of the Physical Life Science Directorate, in association with the Design Physics Division of the Weapon Complex Integration Directorate.
Essential Duties - Conduct research in and development of one or more of the following areas: shockwave physics and thermal radiation heat transfer phenomena. - Validate several advanced hydrodynamics codes using the data obtained from the films. - Participate in the establishment of future research directions and contribute to group grant proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals. - Publish research results technical reports, journal publications, and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings. - Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research. - Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals. - Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Recent PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related field. - Experience in one or more of the following: shockwave physics, thermal radiative heat transfer, computer systems and running complex applications. - Ability to conduct high quality independent research and to develop implementations to evaluate the results. - Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through technical reports and/or publications. - Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations. - Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment.
