We have an opening for a postdoctoral position in the areas of fundamental and applied experimental high-pressure science to research tabletop experiments at LLNL as well as experiments conducted at off-site light sources. The candidate will focus on understanding the physics of materials at high pressure and temperature mainly using the diamond anvil cell (DAC) as an experimental tool and will be expected to develop and implement a high-speed pyrometer for temperature measurements in a DAC. The applicant will be expected to exercise other x-ray capabilities at national synchrotron facilities (e.g. imaging, ultrasonic techniques, x-ray spectroscopy etc.) and will participate in collaborations involving the US and international colleagues including HPCAT/APS/ANL, DCS/APS/ANL and ECB/Petra-III/DESY. This position reports to the High-Pressure Physics Group Leader.
- Contribute to the conception, design, and integration of thermal diagnostics within a DAC to simultaneously measure the temperature, pressure and material properties under extreme conditions.
- Develop and/or conduct table-top experiments (including x-ray diffraction, inelastic scattering, imaging and tomography) using DAC and large volume presses (e.g., the Paris Edinburgh Cell) for measurements of isobars and liquid properties of high Z materials.
- Participate in the High-Pressure Physics Group's ongoing experiments conducted at off-site facilities.
- Publish results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Analyze, report, and present scientific results at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or related scientific field.
- Experience with in-situ diagnostics applied to high pressure platforms (e.g., optical and X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, imaging).
- Experience with comprehensive analysis of data including curve fitting and non-linear fitting routines.
- Experience and familiarity using electronic instrumentation, e.g., oscilloscopes, basic electronic circuits.
- Experience in writing reports, publications and proposals.
- Experience utilizing a scientific approach to problem solving.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Experience working with diamond anvil cells and large volume presses (Paris-Edinburgh Cell).
- Experience working at national user facilities (e.g. HPCAT/APS/ANL).

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
