SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, is seeking a journals manager to drive the future of our portfolio of 11 peer-reviewed journals.
The journals manager leads an internal team of six editorial and production staff, coordinates with journal editorial boards, and oversees vendor relationships to ensure that schedule, quality, and impact standards are met. Primary responsibilities include:
Establishing and monitoring editorial production processes and standards
Creating and managing journals budgets
Developing and implementing content growth, improvement, and open access strategies
Overseeing journal marketing and promotional activities
Establishing annual departmental objectives
The chosen candidate will be a leader within SPIE’s publications department and will work closely with the Director of Publications & Platform on future publications strategy. The journals manager is a primary staff liaison with SPIE’s volunteer publications leadership and oversees all editorial board meetings. Regular travel to SPIE and publishing conferences is required.
Minimum of five years’ experience in scholarly publishing project management
Minimum of two years direct supervisory experience preferred
Extensive knowledge of scientific/technical publishing conventions including Open Access, electronic publishing formats, and production requirements and methods
Physical work location in Bellingham, WA. Telecommuting is not available for this position.
