Physics: High Energy, Physics: Nuclear, Physics: Particle
The Duke University-Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory(TUNL) Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program provides students the opportunity to participate in research at the frontiers of nuclear and particle physics. Students applying to this program have a choice of selecting to participate in one of two research components: (1) nuclear and particle physics at TUNL or (2) high-energy particle physics with the Duke High-Energy Physics (HEP) group. Students who are selected to work with the Duke HEP program will spend about 6 weeks of the 10-week summer program at CERN. The REU students will conduct research under the supervision of professors from the TUNL consortium universities: Duke University, North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each student is fully integrated into a research group and works closely with graduate students, postdocs and other undergraduate students in the group and has opportunities to interact with other groups at TUNL and the High-Energy Physics group at Duke. The students are assigned well-defined projects that are often part of a larger research project or program.

1. Students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program. 2. Preference will be given to students who have completed the sophomore level physics courses or the equivalent by June 2020. 3. Outstanding freshmen students and senior students who will not graduate by June 2020 will be considered on an individual basis. 4. The National Science Foundation requires that NSF-funded students must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. We regret that we are unable to accommodate international students who do not meet these NSF criteria even with external funding support.
Additional Salary Information: In addition to a $5300 stipend, participants are provided with housing and partial board for meals, laundry, and other incidental living expenses. Some limited funds are also available to reimburse participants for travel expenses to and from the program.

The Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Center of Excellence that focuses on low-energy nuclear physics research. TUNL is a consortium of four major research universities in the North Carolina Research Triangle Area: Duke University, North Carolina Central University, a HBCU in Durham, NC, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From these four and other collaborating Universities, about 30 faculty members, 20 postdocs and research scientists, and 50 graduate students conduct research at TUNL. TUNL also hosts a NSF-sponsored REU program each summer for 12 students in nuclear and particle physics.
