ALS Beamline Scientist - 88705 Organization: AL-Advanced Light Source
Berkeley Lab’s, Photon Science Group of the Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) is seeking one or two Scientists with interests and experience in soft x-ray spectroscopy, scattering, or microscopy applied to a wide variety of systems. The successful applicants will work in user support and outreach, technique development, and collaborate with internal and external scientists. The position will report to either the Dichroism Program Lead or the Scattering Program Lead within ALS Photon Science Operations.
The positions will contribute to the division’s quantum and functional materials scientific areas by providing scientific, technical expertise and leadership in the application of soft x-ray spectroscopy, scattering, or spectromicroscopy techniques. The scientists’ responsibilities include developing and using state-of-the-art x-ray equipment at a leading synchrotron radiation facility, participating in the development of data acquisition and analysis methods, supporting users conducting experiments at the ALS, and further developing the scientific program of their beamline through their own research, their outreach to the synchrotron user community and their participation in research collaborations at LBNL.
This multidisciplinary position requires highly developed analytical and quantitative skills, initiative, and independence, in order to critically impact the achievement of ALS organizational goals.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undertaking a new project (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. What You Will Do: • Collaborate with the Advanced Light Source (ALS) user community in performing state-of-the-art soft x-ray spectroscopy, scattering, or spectromicroscopy experiments at the ALS. • Support and train users, and manage the day-to-day operation of the beamline you are responsible for. • Work with ALS scientists and technical staff to upgrade existing, and develop new instrumentation for ALS beamlines. • Plan and drive research and development projects to advance ALS programmatic objectives. • Apply and develop data acquisition and analysis methods. • Participate in service to the scientific community (committee work, workshop organization), engage in outreach to the ALS user community and contribute to the establishment of new research programs. • Document your work, publish your scientific work in peer reviewed scientific and technical journals and present your results at workshops, domestic, and international conferences. • Commitment to safe working practices.Ensure that you and beamline users are trained in accordance with relevant ES&H regulations. • Maintain current knowledge of and implement applicable policies and regulations, including LBNL and ALS Conduct of Operations and Quality Assurance policies and procedures. • Ensure an inclusive work environment for a diverse community at your beamline. • Collaborate and engage with a diverse, multidisciplinary group, including ALS Leadership, Group Leaders, and other key stakeholders.
What is Required: • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in the physical sciences, materials science, or engineering. • Experience and desire to work in a multidisciplinary scientific research environment, collaborating with a variety of researchers at all levels. • Demonstrated ability to initiate and drive projects in an interactive team setting, including the ability to manage competing priorities, and provide quality work on schedule. • Excellent scientific publication record. • Detailed understanding of soft x-ray techniques; demonstrated experience in the operation of complex research equipment. • Highly developed analytical and quantitative skills. • Ability to remain cognizant of cross-Divisional and Lab-wide activities such that development and management of projects are aligned with the overall vision and mission of the Division. • Enjoy teaching other scientists and students how to effectively and safely operate complex scientific instruments. • Ability to work with scientific staff, technical staff, and with people from diverse backgrounds. • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with all constituents including internal and external stakeholders. • Proven excellent organization and problem-solving skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment to independently establish priorities and perform multiple projects simultaneously. • Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills are required for training beamline users, coordinating technical work, documentation of beamline operations as well as for summarizing, presenting, and publishing the results of research and development projects.
Additional Desired Qualifications: • Experience in and a strong understanding of spectroscopy and/or spectromicroscopy techniques and their applications in magnetism and materials science. • Experience in and a strong understanding of coherent x-ray scattering techniques and their applications in physical and chemical sciences. • Five or more years of experience using or operating soft x-ray beamlines and endstations. • Expertise and interest in developing methods that utilize high brightness x-rays beams for imaging or coherent scattering applications. • Expertise and interest in developing analysis methods for large, multidimensional data sets. • Expertise and interest in defining, commissioning, and using complex nano-motion and experiment controls systems.
