Chemistry, Engineering and Technology: Materials, Physics: Optics and Laser
The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command – Armament Center, Benet Laboratories Directorate, seeks applicants for post doctoral research fellowships.
As a post doc at Benet labs, you will lead a self-directed research program in one or several of a variety of possible research areas, including but not necessarily limited to:
Infrared optoelectronic materials, especially group IV materials (Si, Ge, or group IV alloys): materials fabrication, electronic characterization, defect characterization, device design
Laser processing and characterization of novel materials for optoelectronic applications
Plasmonics, metamaterials, photonic materials for optoelectronics
1D and 2D materials: synthesis, optoelectronic characterization
Finite element/multiscale modeling of plasticity in steels and refractory metals for studying fatigue, wear, erosion, and manufacturing/material processing
Research will be conducted at Benet Labs, near Albany, NY. Benet has several laser systems, extensive optoelectronic material and device characterization equipment (esp. DLTS), analytical and synthesis chemistry equipment, and analytical capabilities (XRD, AFM/SPM, FIB-SEM, FTIR, etc). Many techniques can be straightforwardly accessed through our network of local, national, and international collaborators.
For more information, contact: Dr. Jeffrey Warrender, Jeffrey.firstname.lastname@example.org
A doctorate in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is required.
The positions are only open to full U.S. citizens. Green card holders are not eligible for these positions. You must be able to obtain a security clearance.
Fellowships are administered through the National Research Council’s Research Associateship program. (http://nrc58.nas.edu/RAPLab10/Opportunity/Program.aspx?LabCode=16)
The salary is $60k, plus health insurance, relocation expenses, and an annual conference travel stipend.
The position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years, subject to the availability of funding.
Applicants must submit a research proposal through the NRC's website. Applications are accepted quarterly but proposals submitted before Nov 1, 2019 will be given highest priority consideration. Preliminary contact with a Benet PI is strongly encouraged. (It is permissible to apply before you have completed your Ph.D.)
Benet Labs is located in Watervliet, NY. Relocation expenses will be provided. In the heart of New York’s “tech valley”, Benet is in close proximity to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, SUNY Polytechnic, Global Foundries, Regeneron, and numerous other technical institutions and companies. The Albany area is a short drive from the Adirondack Mountains, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the Berkshires of Massachusetts, and is about 3 hours from Boston and New York City.
Benet Labs is a US Army R&D Lab colocated at the Watervliet Arsenal, in Watervliet NY (10 minutes north of Albany, the state capitol). Areas of research focus include large caliber cannon technology, composite materials, coatings, modeling and simulation, and laser irradiation of semiconductors.
