The Department of Physics and Astronomy at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in theoretical physics or astronomy, for appointment beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. Applicants from all areas of physics and astronomy are welcome. The successful candidate will teach physics courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and mentor undergraduate students in theoretical and/or computational research projects. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely-related field by time of appointment. Previous teaching experience (at least at the teaching assistant level) and the ability to include undergraduates in research is required.
The department has a large, active, and diverse student body. Over 50% of our majors are under-represented minorities (URMs), and from 2015-2017 we awarded the 5th most Physics Bachelor’s degrees nationally among non-PhD granting institutions, and the second most in the nation to URM students. Faculty members maintain active research programs that provide hands-on learning opportunities for undergraduates in multiple research areas including: Astrophysics, Biophysics, Optics, Plasma Physics, Solid State Physics, and Physics Education Research. We pride ourselves on our close faculty-student interactions and a history of success in obtaining funding from NSF, NASA, and other external sources. We seek candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the department and academic community and are committed to teaching and participating in an inclusive environment.
