The Fermilab Scientific Computing Division (SCD) seeks outstanding candidates for an Associate Scientist position working on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
Fermilab has a strong and exciting research program on CMS. Fermilab is the home of the LHC Physics Center (LPC) and plays a leading role in physics analysis on CMS in the areas of searches for physics beyond the standard model, studies of the Higgs boson, and measurements of standard model processes. Fermilab is a Tier 1 computing center for CMS and has commitments to CMS computing in many areas including event processing, data operations, simulation and software.
The successful candidate will work within a highly collaborative and inclusive team environment. The candidate will be expected to carry out creative and innovative analysis of data from the proton-proton collisions at CMS, and critical development, operation and/or management of projects on CMS software and computing for Fermilab. The development focus will be on on solving the software and computing challenges for High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). The appointment is for an initial term of three years, and can be extended for an additional three years, with an evaluation for a position without term usually occurring after a total of five years. The Associate Scientist position is roughly equivalent to an Assistant Professor at a university, and the initial appointment within the scientist track at Fermilab.
Qualifications and Essential Job Functions
Demonstrated ability to carry out research and oversee projects concurrently
Ph.D. in Physics, or equivalent subject, and at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience in high energy physics.
Expertise in scientific computing within physics experiments.
Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualification Requirements
In addition to the above, candidates must possess the following to be considered highly qualified for the position.
A strong record of research in HEP and publications in professional journals and presentations at conferences.
Demonstrated accomplishments, for example, in the area of scientific software frameworks and algorithm development, simulation, or workflow and data management.
Strong commitment to community solutions for scientific software and computing and established track record in community work.
Willingness to travel to CERN frequently and/or to stay there for extended periods.
Physical Activity and Work Conditions HUMAN FACTORS: Mental Concentration and Tight Work Schedule.
In addition, the ability to travel by automobile and/or commercial air carrier both domestically and internationally is required.
