The Strategic Firing Subsystems Department (02625) has an opening for a motivated Electrical Engineer to support the development, specification, and testing of electrical components within the department and to provide support to other programs within the Firing & Embedded Systems Group (2620). The tasks for this position include clarification of requirements, planning and procurement of hardware, test planning and execution, analysis of test/analysis data for design performance, design definition and documentation, and communication of program status and engineering data to customers and Sandia management. You will be part of a tightly integrated team working to design, develop, qualify, and produce the W88 Firing Subsystem (FSS) to support Department of Energy and Department of Defense activities. You will have the opportunity to learn and experience engineering across Sandia and the NNSA enterprise as well as taking part in the primary mission of the Lab. You will be self-directed; customer-focused and have strong teaming and analytical skills. It is expected that you will increase your level of responsibility and ownership with experience. On any given day, you may be asked to:
Support the development of functional and interface component requirements
Update design definition and documentation
Support the development, testing and evaluation of hardware to meet requirements
Support integrated tester development for component and subsystems
Work with production agency (Kansas City National Security Campus, KCNSC) counterparts to build hardware, characterize and if necessary, fix performance issues
Provide technical leadership in identifying and handling technical risks
Analyze system performance against requirements
Assess, plan, and report progress relative to program plans
Travel up to twice per month may be required.
The Strategic Firing Subsystems Department 2625 has responsibilities for firing subsystems used on U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force nuclear weapon systems. These products are reliable, operate in extreme environments and have a high, performance consequence. The department has life-cycle product responsibility to design, develop, qualify, validate, produce, monitor, assess and dispose. We provide engineering support for our products including production, surveillance, special finding investigations, and improving our technical basis for understanding performance. Current work activities include support for the W88 ALT 370 program, support for the W87 program and advanced development activities. The staff is a highly competent multidisciplinary team with skills in systems engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical design, performance verification, and project management.

Master's and Bachelor’s in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or related discipline; or equivalent experience, education, and/or achievements
Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Bachelor's and advanced degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering
Experience in one or more of the following: high voltage pulse discharge design, high voltage power supply design, high voltage analog design, and board-level and/or component level circuit design;
Experience in one or more of the following: data processing and analysis; signal processing; quality and design processes; and trusted systems;
Familiarity with the following: flight hardware requirements and qualification; modeling and analysis tools; and electronics and software testing/debugging and data analysis;
Ability to: meet landmarks within cost, schedule, and performance; work across a wide variety of disciplines to integrate designs into a complete system (software, hardware, mechanical, packaging, etc.); working within projects that require alignment to formal engineering design standards, modeling and requirements; and work successfully in a team environment with various disciplines of engineers and scientists;
Knowledge of the NNSA configuration management and engineering authorization (EA) system;
Ability to develop products within the Nuclear Weapon Realize Product Subsystem;
Experience with Nuclear Weapons Mark Quality hardware;
Experience in system engineering of large and complex systems;
Experience with risk management;
You'll have demonstrated ability to work within teams that cross technical disciplines;
Demonstrated effectiveness working in an environment with dynamic conditions, competing priorities, and firm deadlines;
Strong verbal and written interpersonal skills
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site.
