Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is a new synchrotron light source operating at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. NSLS-II seeks a motivated Beamline Scientist for the Soft Inelastic X-ray Scattering (SIX) Beamline. The SIX Beamline, currently under commissioning, will provide state-of-the-art Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) capabilities, with ultra-high energy resolution in the soft X-ray range (160 eV – 2300 eV) up to 70000 resolving power, thus enabling the study of the electronic properties in quantum materials with an unprecedented energy resolution.
The new beamline scientist will be a member of a diverse scientific group. Working closely with the Lead Beamline Scientist and the scientific user community, the selected candidate will assist with the commissioning activities of the beamline towards the ultra-high energy resolution, support operation of the beamline, contribute to development/upgrade projects, establish relevant research projects and develop opportunities for scientific collaborations that exploit the unique qualities of the SIX beamline. The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level depending on depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills that she or he brings to the position.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Active contribution to the beamline commissioning activities
Innovate and upgrade the instrumentation to fulfill the scientific demand and maintain the beamline performances to the forefront
Provide users with the support and capabilities needed to achieve and complete high-impact experiments
Develop an independent science program and work as member of a team to conduct experimental programs in the Soft X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy Group at NSLS-II
Collaborate with NSLS-II and BNL scientists and General Users for effective and innovative use of the SIX beamline.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or related fields
At least two (2) years of experience (beyond the Ph.D. degree) in synchrotron-based soft X-ray scattering techniques
Good understanding of strongly correlated electron systems
Strong publication record
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Prior experience of constructing and/or operating beamlines and providing user support in an X-ray user facility
Demonstrated experience in data analysis and data reduction
Significant Python programming experience or similar skills and a willingness to contribute to the development of NSLS-II data analysis tools in an open-source, collaborative environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of EPICS
Demonstrated capability of working independently
Good organizational, analytical skills and work planning capabilities
Proven abilities for disseminating research by writing papers and giving academic talks
Applicants should submit at least 3 names of contacts whom we can request formal letters of recommendation.
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
