Engineering and Technology: Nanotechnology, Physics: Nanotechnology, Physics: Optics and Laser
Seeking a Ph.D. to support research projects at the University of Notre Dame in nanotechnology related to either metamaterial fabrication or single molecule spectroscopy. Metamaterial fabrication demands considerable skill with diffractive laser optics, optical trapping and microfluidics, while the spectroscopy is performed with a scanned probe microscope in conjunction with sub-nanopores through solid-state membranes, for applications in sequencing single molecules of DNA, protein and for single cell analysis. The successful applicant must have completed a PhD preferably in physics, biophysics, electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, with a proven capacity for world-class research that is reflected in a publication record.
Extensive experience in a subset of the following disciplines is mandatory: atomic force/scanning probe microscopy; free-space laser optics; transmission electron microscopy; micro- and nanofluidics; semiconductor nanofabrication; low-noise, phase-sensitive lock-in measurements; expertise in programming with MATLAB, LABVIEW, C++, Python and Igor; and familiarity with molecular and cell biology.
