MBARI’s Bioinspiration Lab seeks a Research Engineer to lead the development of a next-generation underwater imaging system for remotely-operated and autonomous underwater vehicles (ROVs and AUVs). This is a full-time position to support a project funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Funding for this position is for three years. The initial term is up to one year, with extensions dependent on job performance and expected continued funding. The candidate must have a background in a STEM field, and demonstrable skills in electrical engineering, software engineering, and embedded systems. Previous work with underwater camera systems is highly desirable.
The candidate works in support of a PI, and will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers developing tools for studying movement and ecology of marine organisms. The position requires an ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with other team members. Excellent organization, experience working in the field or at sea, and project management skills is preferred. The position will involve the development of novel oceanographic instrumentation from the concept stage to field-testing the final product on MBARI’s ROV and AUV assets.
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or equivalent experience is required. Advanced degree is preferred. The candidate must be able to work with diverse groups of people. The position may include occasional, long (approx. 1 month) oceanographic cruises, travel to distant and remote locales, as well as scientific meetings.
