MTA Metro-North Railroad is a dynamic organization, operating out of the jewel of New York City, Grand Central Terminal. We provide service to over 82 million customers annually, traveling in and out of New York and Connecticut. Assist the Engineer - Hardware Systems in the installation, 24/7 maintenance and management of all hardware components for all of Metro-North Railroad’s mission-critical and safety-critical control systems which are used to operate, control and support all Railroad Operations.
This includes the Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) systems for Grand Central Terminal (GCT) and the entire mainline, the Power Control Center systems including Traction power control for third rail and overhead catenary, and Signal Power control in both the New York Operations Control Center and the Emergency Operations Control Center locations. It also includes Field Vital Processor Interlockings, Fiber-Optics Communications Interface Systems, the Operations Remote View Workstation Network and the Signal Control Desk at the New York Operations Control Center.
Additionally, this position is responsible to manage and coordinate source data and information with the Metro-North’s operation, customer communications and business functions. The systems impacted include, vital wayside processors, View Workstations, Customer Information Systems and employee payroll systems.
This position is also responsible for providing design, development installation and testing associated with the federally mandated Positive Train Control system requirements office mission critical safety servers and Train Dispatcher control interfaces.
Provide daily hardware systems management for all Metro-North’s real-time operation control systems for CTC, GCT, Power, Signal Control Desk, PTC and Field Electronics.
Provide daily interactions with the Transportation and Power departments in direct support of safety, the rail operation and business plan.
Provide technical support in troubleshooting systems failures with both office and field C&S employees.
Manage the required FRA safety testing and monitor payroll and ongoing projects.
Manage the Material and Test equipment required for they systems operation.
Provide a lead in supporting Metro-North Safety Program through the execution of required activities and policies associated with personnel working along or on the railroad right-of-way and other locations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong knowledge and experience in the integration of digital networks.
Knowledge of virtual systems management.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or comparable applications.
Ability to develop and manage service and equipment database inventory.
Strong analytical skills in order to analyze new and existing products, equipment and/or procedures.
Must be able to recommend improvements or replacements to better support the voice and communications systems.
Must be able to work in a high-profile/high-pressure environment.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal departments and outside agencies.
Must be able to implement and participate in Metro-North Railroad’s Safety Program.
Ability to be available 24 hours 7 days a week as needed.
Valid Driver’s License.
Associate’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related science. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education, and/or technical credentials to include two (2) additional years of related experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the management/maintenance of computer Hardware and Operating Systems such as Windows Servers (2012 or later) and Windows Desktop (Windows 7 or later).
Minimum of two (2) years of experience with data communications via modems and computers.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in management or supervision of technical workforces.
Strong knowledge of railroad, power and remote-control systems.
Knowledge of FRA regulations and requirements as they apply to signal systems.
Experience in control logic used in signal systems power control computer systems.
This is a federally regulated position subject to both pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.
As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $97,448.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker. Effective September 2017, all full-time non-agreement personnel other than those directly involved with the movement of trains or delivery of service, or assigned to other emergency response teams, are required to serve in the Station Terminal Auxiliary Response (STAR) program requiring Terminal coverage for Grand Central Terminal (GCT) from 4:30 PM-7:30 PM one week per year or responding to Station STAR duty during a service disruption, system-wide at various hours including nights and weekends. This program is designed to improve Metro-North’s ability to provide customer service during emergencies that impact service delivery or other service disruptions that require staff to provide directions and information to MNR customers at GCT or outlying stations. Please note, hours worked during your participation week are subject to change.
