The Division of Materials Science and Engineering of Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory, affiliated with Iowa State University, is seeking an Assistant Scientist I.
This position will provide technical and scientific support for surface science research within Ames Laboratory. Incumbent will maintain and modify research equipment; conduct experiments; analyze and report scientific data; and assist in the preparation of manuscripts, research reports, and proposals. Individual will train group members on standard operating procedures within the laboratory.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. They will have excellent communication and organization skills. They will also have knowledge and skill in collecting, processing, and interpreting experimental data using a variety of techniques.
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.
Supplemental required education and experience:
Degree in Physics, Materials Science or Related Field
Advanced degree in Physics, Materials Science or related field.
Experience with maintenance and construction of ultra-high vacuum systems.
Experience with operation and maintenance of angle resolved photo emission spectrometers (ARPES)
Experience with operation and maintenance of Ti:Sapphire ultrafast lasers
Experience with operation and maintenance of scanning probe microscope (AFM+MFM)
Understanding of general principles of ARPES, experience with data collection and light data analysis
Experience with machining small parts (aluminum + stainless)
Completed undergraduate level course that covered quantum mechanics and solid state physics
