: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\. : We are seeking a postdoctoral associate to join our team working on understanding biological lignin degradation and conversion into valuable bioproducts\. The project team is working with scientists at the Joint BioEnergy Institute to investigate how microbes and microbial communities depolymerize lignin to smaller fractions and subsequently metabolize the resulting compounds\. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Focus primarily on studying the enzymes involved in the processes listed above, with a particular focus on developing a system for efficient heterologous expression of lignolytic enzymes in yeast, fungi and plants, understanding the enzymology of lignin degradation and optimizing enzyme mixtures for generation of defined intermediates from lignin\. Enzymes will be characterized on relevant model substrates as well as on lignin streams coming from pretreated biomass and will be studied both in isolation and in combination with other enzymes;+ Utilize a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry and enzymology, particularly as they apply to studying enzymes involved in lignin degradation and metabolism;+ Collaborate closely with other JBEI scientists, so the abilities to work in teams and communicate effectively are critical\. Required: + PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry or other relevant field;+ Extensive experience in heterologous protein expression in yeast, fungi, and/or plants, protein purification, biophysical characterization and enzymology;+ Demonstrated track record of publishing in peer\-reviewed scientific literature; Desired: + Strong interpersonal and communication skills;+ Ability to work with multi\-disciplinary teams;+ Previous research experience with lignolytic enzymes, including laccases, peroxidases and enzymes involved in the metabolism of aromatic compounds derived from lignin;+ Previous research experience in the field of lignin depolymerization and development of assays methods for detecting lignolysis products;+ Experience engineering enzymes for improved stability and performance;+ Experience with high\-throughput enzyme assay development and enzyme mixture optimization\.
