Vytran, a division of Thorlabs seeks a senior-level optical/laser engineer to join our Research & Development team. The candidate will be responsible for running their own research projects aimed at developing advanced optical fiber processing equipment for a new generation of glass processing equipment.
The position is based in Morganville, NJ. Domestic and international travel will be less than 10%.
Essential Job Functionsinclude the following, but are not limited to:
Work independently and collaboratively on research projects.
Work with CO2 laser, CW and pulsed, on optical fiber processing
Design experiments and qualification/test plans for the system and the processes.
Optical system design in Zemax, prototyping, and system troubleshooting
Detailed documentation on design, experiment, prototyping, testing, and etc…
Participate in engineering and general design reviews as required.
Perform optical expertise function for engineering team and all manufacturing operations for any related issues, problems, or improvements.
Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing/design issues and implement cost reduction ideas with regard to company products.
Interact with vendors and purchasers concerning supplied and proposed components.
Keep current with newest applications, products, and manufacturing techniques within the industry. Share, discuss, and collaborate while looking for opportunities to implement.
5+ years’ experience designing optical systems with hands on experience working in the lab environment.
Experience with CAD, prefer Inventor, SolidWorks.
Demonstrated technical background and hands on experience in such fields as optics, opto-mechanical design, laser optics, polarization, microscopy, and telecommunications. Hands on experience with optics including alignment, measurement, and testing
M.S. in Optical Engineering or Physics
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
In depth knowledge of CO2 laser systems and material processing with laser systems
Able to work on multiple projects concurrently
Proficient on optical system design and troubleshooting with Zemax
Knowledge of optical-mechanical and electrical components in the system
Team oriented. Proven teamwork skills in a cross-functional engineering environment
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of current optical design, fabrication, assembly, and test techniques
Project Management skills a plus
Strong ability to take initiative with a deep sense of ownership
History of demonstrated innovation
Flexibility/adaptability in a fast-paced & dynamic environment
