£53,219 - £62,611 (Discretionary range to £72,003)
We have an opening for a Principal Beamline Scientist to lead in the area of polarised soft x-ray spectroscopy and microscopy.
Beamline I06 uses an intense X-ray beam (80eV-2100eV), to study magnetic phenomena. The activity includes magnetic imaging of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic nanostructures using PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM), X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) using a superconducting vector magnet and ultrafast Soft X-Ray Diffraction (SXD). The successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of the beamline and its development including an upgrade to an aberration-corrected PEEM. The beamline is part of the Magnetism Group within Diamond and has close links with I10, I16 and I21 which concentrate on XMCD, Hard X-ray Diffraction and Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS).
Suitable candidates should have expertise in polarised soft x-ray science including x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, x-ray magnetic linear dichroism and soft x-ray diffraction. The position will involve being responsible for beamline upgrades and defining/leading development projects. Experience of polarised x-ray science and knowledge of related techniques (e.g. XMCD, SXD) is a requirement for this role. Developing a strong in-house science programme is also a critical aspect of this role. The selected candidate will be expected to conduct their own internationally leading research activities on the beamline and elsewhere.
