The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Andrew Fruchter on astrophysical transients. The postdoctoral fellow will work on programs using the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray observatory to study the energetics and astrophysical origins of gamma-ray bursts. Other work by the group that the fellow could participate in are HST studies of gravitational wave sources, tidal disruption events, and core collapse and superluminous supernovae. The James Webb Space Telescope is expected to begin operations during the tenure of this position, so STScI should be a particularly exciting place to be.
The nominal start date is expected to be in Summer/Fall 2018, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal to a 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the post-doctoral researcher position. Previous experience in studies of astrophysical transients associated with black holes or neutron stars and reduction of data from space-based observatories are both helpful, but applicants who have emphasized theoretical interpretation of observations should also apply. Most important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.
