Electrical Engineer / Applied Physicist - Pulsed Power Systems Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

We have multiple openings for exceptional engineers to work on projects in pulsed power and applied electromagnetics. You will develop creative and innovative solutions for multiple programs at LLNL, and contribute to the research and development of next-generation pulsed power systems and experimental platforms. You will be responsible for the design, instrumentation, and execution of unique experiments that are of critical interest to national security. You will bring innovation and technical excellence to bear on some of the most challenging technical problems our nation faces, and develop novel engineering practices and approaches to continually improve performance and reliability of existing R&D systems. These positions are in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Essential Duties - Design, test, and analyze pulsed power and electromagnetic devices and components in support of state-of-the-art pulsed power experimental platform research and development. - Simulate electromagnetic and/or physical phenomena using the appropriate simulation tools, which may range from SPICE-based circuit solvers to magnetohydrodynamic or full-wave electromagnetic solvers running on LLNL's Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) platforms. - Present and disseminate research results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, in open and classified environments, internal and external to LLNL. - Provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity that require creative use of established and/or innovative methods. - Adhere to the highest standards of personnel and facility while leading the execution of high-energy, multi-hazard system demonstrations and experiments. - Perform other duties as assigned. In Addition at the SES.3 Level - Provide solutions to broadly defined complex problems that require in-depth analysis and the creative use of established and/or innovative methods. - Propose, contrive, and conduct high-level briefings to executive management and government sponsors. - Propose and execute major experiment campaigns to substantiate programmatic goals.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. - Demonstrated ability to devise innovative solutions to problems in electromagnetics (including impedance matching, high-voltage breakdown mitigation, antenna design and transmission line design, or electromagnetic diagnostic and instrumentation, and related areas). - Comprehensive knowledge and experience using computational tools and techniques to perform design and analysis of electromagnetic devices and components (including numerical circuit solvers, finite-element/finite difference codes, method-of-moments codes, or hydrodynamic/magnetohydrodynamic codes). - Experience developing numerical models (using Python, MATLAB, Mathematica or similar) to understand and predict the behavior of moderately complex physical phenomena/systems. - Possess innovative skills to address challenging problems by identifying/developing creative solutions. - Process innovative skills to address challenging problems by identifying/developing creative solutions. - Demonstrated aptitude for (and interest in) mastering new fields of engineering and physics; a record of creativity, physical insight, and breadth of understanding in applications of moderately complex physical processes. - Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, projects, and priorities. - Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate and present and explain technical information in a multi-disciplinary team environment. In Addition at the SES.3 Level - Advanced knowledge of a specific area of science related to pulsed power and electromagnetic hardware design, analysis, or simulation. - Demonstrated ability to provide solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis. - Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
Desired qualifications - Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
