Argonne is currently inviting applications for the position of Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) of the Physical Sciences and Engineering (PSE) Directorate, which employs approximately 700 people including scientists, technical and administrative staff, postdocs, fellows, students, visiting scholars and joint appointments and has an annual budget in excess of $200 million. The directorate’s R&D programs have produced a wide range of groundbreaking, internationally recognized discoveries and inventions throughout Argonne’s history.
The scope of PSE’s research encompasses materials science, condensed matter physics, chemistry and chemical engineering, and nuclear and particle physics. This work is carried out through five discipline-based operating divisions and is funded primarily by DOE’s Office of Science and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Facilities supporting PSE’s research include two adjacent, state-of-the-art laboratory and office buildings designed for materials and chemistry research: the 158,000 sq ft Energy Sciences Building completed in 2013 and the 115,000 sq ft Materials Design Laboratory now under construction and scheduled for completion in 2019.
The directorate operates two national user facilities that serve external as well as internal researchers: the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System, used for low-energy nuclear research, and the Center for Nanoscale Materials, which focuses on nanoscience and nanotechnology. PSE scientists and engineers collaborate actively with staff from UChicago and other major universities, other national laboratories, and industry, often through special multi-institution research centers established by DOE to pursue focused missions over a specified time frame. In addition, PSE is very closely linked with UChicago’s Institute for Molecular Engineering, some of whose staff hold joint appointments within PSE and maintain research facilities at Argonne.
As a member of Argonne’s senior management team, the PSE ALD will play a crucial role in defining Laboratory strategies and goals and supporting their implementation, working with the Laboratory Director, Deputy Directors, and Argonne’s four other Associate Laboratory Directors. This team has put in motion a robust and forward-looking strategic plan that will continue to expand Argonne’s leadership in science and research. PSE will play a vital role in the success of strategic Laboratory initiatives to be implemented over the next several years. These initiatives will develop new capabilities in exascale, neuromorphic, and quantum computing and machine learning; hard x-ray 3D microscopy; discovery of emergent phenomena and synthesis of novel materials and chemical systems; computational and experimental physics that explores the early universe; and efficient scaling of manufacturing processes for energy technology materials.
The PSE ALD will have the exciting challenge to lend further vision to the plan and manage the successful implementation of strategic initiatives while continuing to enhance core research programs. Some of the key opportunities for the PSE ALD include:
Building new programs in the chemical, molecular and materials sciences that strategically leverage synergies across Argonne’s traditional strengths.
Leading development of innovative multidisciplinary, Lab-wide programs that draw on Argonne’s expertise in materials, chemistry, particle and nuclear physics, computing, and imaging.
Driving Argonne’s vision and strategy for groundbreaking R&D in “post-lithium-ion” electrochemistry and energy storage.
Key line management responsibilities of the PSE ALD will be to:
Provide senior leadership for PSE research and operations, through the directors of PSE’s divisions.
Build and strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations among external stakeholders in the national laboratory complex, academia, and industry
Develop, enhance and manage funding for directorate R&D programs
Serve as a primary interface with senior leaders within UChicago, DOE, and other sponsors in the directorate’s sphere of research
Support recruitment and development of an outstanding and diverse science and engineering staff
Master’s degree in a scientific/technical field is required with a Ph.D. preferred.
10+ years’ experience is required, including successful management of high-performing, multidisciplinary teams and complex, multimillion-dollar programs within research and development (R&D) organizations
Demonstrated ability to define and successfully execute visionary R&D strategies.
Demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships with federal agencies that support R&D.
Demonstrated ability to identify new R&D funding opportunities and secure new program funding, including funding awarded through formal competitive proposal processes.
Demonstrated skills in executive-level oral and written communications and in creation of partnerships within organizations and with external partners.
Demonstrated success in talent management and development in a diverse, inclusive workforce.
