Chair of the Department of Mathematics
The University of Rochester invites applications and nominations for the position of chair of the Department of Mathematics. Candidates should have an exceptional research record in mathematics; leadership and vision; experience and capability to manage an academic unit, including developing new projects and programs, mentoring junior researchers, and administration of the Department; and an ability to connect to a wide range of constituents in the University, academia, industry, foundations, and government. The chair will be expected to envision, build, and sustain multi-disciplinary research partnerships and initiatives within the University and in the wider entrepreneurial ecosystem. The ideal chair will develop Rochester’s prominence as a leader in contemporary and applied mathematics research and education.
The Math department at the University of Rochester is a research-oriented department with a strong interest in preparing the next generation of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers for successful careers in industry, research, and business. The doctoral program currently enrolls 31 students who benefit not only from faculty guidance but who can also gain valuable professional experience participating in the department’s innovation undergraduate program, including WeBWork. The department currently has 20 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 12 visiting faculty, 8 teaching faculty, and 7 emeritus professors. The standard teaching load for TT faculty is 2:1.
The chair of the Department of Mathematics reports directly to dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The new chair will be expected to shape institutional priorities within a dynamic environment that values nimble adaptation, academic innovation, and commitment to excellence with high standards of performance.
Qualifications
Competitive candidates will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:
Research Stature: distinguished research accomplishments, commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor in an AAU institution; Program Leadership: proven ability in and a strong commitment to fostering research and education in mathematics; Diversity and Inclusiveness: demonstrated record of increasing diversity at every level of the university: faculty, staff, and students; Leadership Experience: experience with the navigation of complex organizational structures with multi-faceted strategies, and especially the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people, the capacity to listen, and the ability to gain trust and inspire others to further the Department’s mission and programs; Fundraising skill: willingness to engage others on behalf of the University’s mission, and to serve as the Department’s key fundraising interface to the administration and the Advancement department; and Administrative Skill: fiscally responsible and able to lead decision-making in finance, space, and related resources.
