Now in our 39th year, the Physics REU program at the University of Notre Dame provides opportunities for Physics students to experience research first-hand, under direct supervision of faculty mentors. The  program gives you valuable research experience to help you decide if physics research is right for you.

Areas of research include Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biophysics and Complex Systems, Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy and Elementary Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, and Quantum Materials. Students will work closely with faculty and graduate students on a variety of current research projects in these areas.

You will benefit from a number of activities organized to enrich your experience. These include weekly seminars; a course on computer programming; a GRE preparation course; a scientific writing course; ethics workshops; a workshop on applying to graduate schools; field trips to nearby national laboratories; and the REU Symposium where you will present the results of your research. You will also maintain a logbook and write a project report. In addition, a variety of recreational and social activities are organized to make your stay with us “fun”.

Participants are granted a stipend, university housing, and assistance with travel to and from Notre Dame. Financial assistance is also available for participation/presentation at scientific meetings.

Students* with a background in physics having completed the sophomore or junior year are invited to apply. Applications should include a statement describing your interests and relevant background (mathematics, computer and research experience, special skills); a transcript; and, two letters of recommendation from faculty members from your undergraduate institution.

Deadline for completed applications: February 17, 2025

We especially welcome applications from students who belong to groups that are traditionally underrepresented in sciences (women, members of underrepresented minorities, first generation college students), and those with disabilities.
