About Montana State University - Physics: Montana State University's Physics Department has internationally recognized research groups in Astrophysics, Biophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Gravitational Physics, Lasers and Optics, Physics Education, Solar Physics, and the Space Sciences. Numerous outreach activities carry physics to K-12 teachers, classrooms, and the general public. Student involvement is central to the departments educational, research, and outreach activities. The varied accomplishments of our department are a tribute to the extraordinary efforts of the 19 tenure-track faculty, 6 research and teaching faculty, 25 postdoctoral fellows and research scientists, 68 graduate students, and 102 undergraduate students, supported by an outstanding and highly-motivated staff. Student involvement in research and outreach are key elements to the departments success. Montana State University is situated in Bozeman, Montana, a place that is small enough to have a personality, but big enough to have all the amenities of a city. The area attracts highly motivated individuals who like to both work hard and enjoy life, living close to nature in a beautiful Rocky Mountain setting. Bozeman is home to numerous high technology companies, including a number that focus on optics, photonics, cryogenics, electronics, and soware. MSU is designated as "very high research activity" (R-1) under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions. Montana State University is the largest research and development entity in the state. MSU recorded nearly $258 million for FY24 research expenditures.
