Our SURF program is a ten-week full-time immersive research program held at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Research Innovation and Technology in Jupiter, Florida.
The program has a research focus that integrates cutting-edge bioscience research with the development of chemical tools. Students are placed in laboratories in our five departments: Chemistry; Immunology and Microbiology; Integrative Structural and Computational Biology; Molecular Medicine; and Neuroscience.
The program dates are June 3, 2024, to August 9, 2024. Participants are highly encouraged to start and end on the specified dates, however, start and end dates are flexible and can be slightly adjusted based on a participant’s schedule. All participants must complete ten weeks and present at the final poster session.
All participants receive a stipend, and housing is provided at a nearby hotel. Partial relocation (travel to and from Jupiter, Florida) is also included. The stipend for the summer of 2024 is $6,000.00.
Participants are placed in laboratories that work in their area of interest and are matched with a faculty mentor accordingly. Students are expected to work full-time in the laboratory and participate in weekly research seminars and professional development meetings, which provide mentorship on writing graduate school applications and honing scientific presentation skills. The program culminates with a campus-wide poster session, where participants give a present their research at the Summer Student Symposium.

The scientists of The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology work at the exciting interface of chemistry and biology. We blend leading-edge expertise and resources to illuminate the molecular basis of health and disease. Employing unique and advanced tools of drug discovery, we pursue novel treatments for a world of unmet medical needs, in areas including genetic diseases, infectious diseases, brain disorders, autoimmune diseases and cancers.
The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute campus in Jupiter, Florida was founded by Scripps Research, one of the world’s most innovative nonprofit biomedical research organizations. We joined the University of Florida, rated a top public university, in 2022. Together, UF Health and The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute work to advance science, science education and medicine, all for the benefit of humanity. The Skaggs Graduate School of Chemical and Biological Sciences at Scripps Research trains the next generation of scientists on our campus through its nationally recognized Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences.
We offer unique resources for scientists, including our state-of-the-art molecular imaging center, w...hich is equipped with cryo-electron microscopy. Also, following a grant of hundreds of thousands of microbial natural product strains, the institute is home to the Natural Products Discovery Center, where scientists mine the collection for new compounds with potential to treat human disease.
Today, around 500 people work at our campus, including more than 40 principal investigators.
