: We are seeking Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct research and development toward piezoelectric and/or photonic MEMS technologies\. Required: + Ph\.D\. in physics or electrical engineering, or a related science or engineering discipline received within the last five years\.+ Experience in one of the following categories: - Piezoelectric and/or photonics design, modeling, characterization, and/or integration\.- Microfabrication, especially with aluminum nitride, lithium niobate, or III\-V compound semiconductors\.+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance Desired: + Experience in any of the following areas: - Piezoelectric microsystems- Chip\-scale photonics- Multiphysics finite element analysis tools- Microfabrication and integration+ Technical background and eagerness to learn new tools/techniques and to share knowledge with the team+ Adaptability to changing tasks and projects as needed+ Problem\-solving skills to develop creative technical solutions+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills+ Eagerness to work in a multi\-disciplinary team environment+ Ability to bring diverse technical perspectives, experience, and interests to the department Department Description: The MEMS Technology Department \(http://mems\.sandia\.gov/\) conducts research and development for advanced micro\-electromechanical systems that push the technology envelope for national security applications and develops and maintains a core set of MEMS fabrication processes and technologies\.Our programs in advanced MEMS include mechanisms, pressure sensors, inertial sensors, microfluidic valves, electrical switches, RF switches, RF filters, mirrors, planar light wave circuits \(PLC\), solar cells, and radiation detectors\. We specialize in high\-performance and high\-security applications, where low cost is not the principle motivation for using MEMS\. We use advanced techniques, such as, optical transduction of displacement, to achieve unique devices\. Novel designs and applications are closely coupled to our processing technologies, pushing the design\-processing envelope to enable special capabilities for national security needs\. Our MEMS fabrication processing technologies include our baseline polysilicon surface micromachining process, SUMMiT V \(Sandia Ultra\-planar Multi\-level MEMS Technology with five levels of polysilicon\), and variations on SUMMiT V that incorporate, for example, silicon nitride layers, deep reactive ion etching \(DRIE\), silicon\-on\-insulator \(SOI\) wafers, and/or doping to create field effect transistors \(SFET\)\. Additional MEMS fabrication processes include post\-CMOS compatible processes for molded tungsten and aluminum nitride\. Other MEMS core technologies include MEMS design, layout and analysis services; device testing and characterization; reliability science and testing; and failure analysis\. Our fabrication processes and other core technologies are available outside of Sandia to support national security interests, for example, for prototype development and/or limited production of high\-value devices\.
