: We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to support chemistry, thermal processing, and advanced manufacturing laboratories at the AML\. This position will support of a broad range of Sandia missions through materials development and deployment\. The job will require a range of support functions, including general lab operations, synthetic chemistry experimentation, materials characterization, designing, building and maintaining pressure systems, operating thermal characterization tools, and working with a variety of additive manufacturing tools\. Key functions include: + Designing, maintaining, and monitoring pressure systems for all laboratories\.+ Setting, running and analyzing samples with thermal processing tools \(TGA, DSC, and related\)+ Preparing samples and analyzing with XRD, NMR, SAXS and other x\-ray diffraction and spectroscopic instruments+ Setting up and monitoring chemical reactions using solvo\-thermal and solution precipitation routes+ Imaging, documenting, and analyzing samples via light microscopy+ Maintaining laboratory operations, including equipment servicing, repair, and modification+ Interacting with and supporting numerous scientists and engineers engaged in materials research, troubleshooting, and failure analysis+ Collaborating with key technical staff to realize their ideas and accomplish project goals+ Working occasional overtime to meet program deadlines Required: + Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field+ Experience working in a laboratory+ Experience working as part of a research team+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance Desired: + Experience with pressure systems \(pressurized gas delivery, regulation, safety\)+ Experience and basic chemistry laboratory skills+ Mechanical interests and skills+ Effective interpersonal and oral/written communication skills+ Experience in and/or ability to organize tasks to enable work on multiple projects simultaneously+ Detail\-oriented mindset+ Ability and desire to work independently+ Outstanding work habits and self\-motivation+ Interest in learning more about thermal processing and materials science+ A genuine curiosity for science and a love and aptitude for learning+ Strong commitment to customer satisfaction, quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork Department Description: The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities\. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano\-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal\-particle ?inks? and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self\-assembly of nanoparticles in 2\- and 3\-dimensions\. Processing research and development includes; providing a Direct Write capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospining of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments\. Our customers include all of Sandia's mission areas and numerous external collaborators\. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico\.
