The Department of Physics at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) seeks an innovative researcher in the field of biophysics to be the next Pei-Ling Chan Chair of Physics. The department aims to broaden its research portfolio beyond our traditional strengths in astrophysics, optics and photonics, and nonlinear materials. The Chan Chair would anchor this effort and play a key role in determining the future direction of departmental and college research in this field. The particular area within the biophysics field is not specified, and could be theoretical, experimental, computational, or a combination. Examples include biological and biologically-inspired materials; nanoscale biophysics; dynamics, imaging, and spectroscopy of single molecules and the manipulation of molecules in living cells; and nano-structural and nano-mechanical properties of biological surfaces.
This endowed position offers an exciting opportunity for joint research, educational projects, and collaborations within UAH as well as with non-profit, government, and industrial partners located in Huntsville and the region. Responsibilities include establishing and developing a biophysics presence in the department and in collaboration with other departments as applicable, teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, and supporting and advising students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The Chan Chair can also be part of the existing interdisciplinary Biotechnology Science and Engineering doctoral program.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and have credentials in research and teaching for appointment with tenure as a senior Associate Professor or Professor. They will have a record of, and be currently successful in, securing external funding and in supporting and graduating Ph.D. students.
