Amherst College invites applications for the inaugural administrative director of the college's new interdisciplinary science center, which will be housed in a state-of-the-art building that is set to be completed in 2018. An appointment to this position will be made during the construction phase of the center, with accompanying duties, and will continue after the building opens—with additional ongoing responsibilities. The new science center will house Amherst's Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics andAstronomyand Psychology and the college's Biochemistryand Biophysics and Neuroscience Programs. The facility will also serve the entire campus community. The administrative director will work closely with the dean of the faculty and an associate dean of the faculty, and in collaboration with a faculty science center advisory committee, as well as with the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics and Geology, which are located in other campus spaces; will manage the day-to-day administrative operations of the center; will serve as a liaison to offices across campus; and will act as an advocate for the sciences with internal and external constituencies, communicating about and promoting the sciences. During the construction phase of the science center, the administrative director will work with academic departments and the college's facilities department to ensure a smooth transition from current facilities to the new building, including planning and coordinating the move of furniture, fixtures, and scientific equipment. In collaboration with the dean of the faculty, the faculty advisory committee, and other members of the science faculty, the administrative director, will establish short- and continuing long-term plans for the development of facilities, equipment, and services in the sciences.
Once the science center opens, the administrative director will be responsible, in collaboration with the dean of the faculty, for the following: overseeing the center's security, safety, animal-care facilities, maintenance of shared equipment, and facilities that are not the specific responsibilities of academic departments or of the facilities department; coordinating services that are provided to the center by college offices that include information technology, facilities, campus police, and environmental health and safety; hiring, supervising, and evaluating individuals in some non-departmental staff positions; facilitating a process to make allocations of non-classroom space in the center; maintaining regulatory licenses for inventories of controlled substances and radionuclides; working with science and environmental and health and safety staff to ensure that the science center is in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding health and safety and toxic substances, and coordinating employee/student/faculty training with respect to dangerous substances; chairing or serving on some standing committees (e.g., regulatory committees); in conjunction with others, preparing and overseeing the science center operating budget, non-departmental (institutional) endowed funds relating to the sciences, and non-departmental (institutional) grant budgets for those funds that are not the specific responsibility of academic departments or an individual PI; administering grants secured for the sciences when individual faculty, departments, or other administrative units are not the appropriate administrators; coordinating the allocation of student research funding for summer work and collaborating on assessment efforts; and coordinating with the Office of Advancement and other units to obtain funding for the support of the sciences at the college. Other responsibilities will be identified and assigned, as needed.
A master's degree in business administration, science, educational administration or related fields and five years of relevant experience, preferably in an academic setting, or a bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience, is required. Experience in managing complex multifaceted operations, complex budgets, scientific equipment, and a substantial support staff is also required. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal, problem-solving,writing/verbal communication skills; possess the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of people around a diverse array of topics in afast-paced environment; and be proficientwith a range of software, including office utilities, tools for file sharing,basic databases, and online communication (e.g., blogging, web site building, and video sharing).
