Berkeley Lab (LBNL, http://www.lbl.gov/) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
Position Summary: Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source (ALS, https://als.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Physics Postdoctoral Fellow. You will carry out research developing laser cooled cesium and francium atom fountains and collaborate on the Electron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) experiment.
What You Will Do:
Perform research on the development of cesium (and francium) atom fountains using magnetic field gradients to accelerate and transport ultra-cold atoms.
Collaborate on the electron EDM experiment working closely with ALS scientists, other Postdocs and students, and collaborators from other institutions.
Communicate results through internal reports, internal and external presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
What Is Required:
Ph.D. degree in physics or related field.
Demonstrated experience in the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of ultra-cold alkali atom fountain experiments using magneto optical traps.
Interest in EDM experiments and the ability to work in a collaboration that includes, among others, engineers, computer scientists, scientific staff, technicians, and students, and communicate effectively with all.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience with electric dipole moment experiments and/or other precision measurements.
Experience with atom magnetometers.
Experience working at accelerators.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
This is a full time 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
