The Center for High Energy Density Science (CHEDS) of the University of Texas at Austin seeks a Research Associate to guide the science effort of the Extreme Fields and Plasma Group. The Center studies the interaction of ultra-intense laser light with matter and conducts fundamental research into exotic states of matter with high energy densities and ultra-high electromagnetic fields.
A PhD in Physics and two years of post-doctorate work experience in high intensity, short pulse lasers and experiments using those lasers are requirements for this position. Experience in laser, optic, opto-mechanical design, PIC and/or Monte Carlo codes (e.g. EPOCH, PSC, MCNP, Geant, etc.) to run simulations in field of High Energy Density Physics or Relativistic Laser Matter interaction is highly preferred. Undergraduate and graduate student teaching and mentoring experience and experience writing grant proposals and publishing papers are also preferred qualifications.
The successful applicant will play a key role in the contrast and intensity enhancement of the Texas Petawatt as well as direct design construction and activation of new Extreme Fields and Plasmas Group laboratory space including the GHOST laser. He or she will design and implement experiments on both on and off-site laser facilities and publish results at conferences and in peer reviewed journals. The successful applicant will support the group leader, Professor Hegelich, in program development activities, and general operation of the group, mentor students and support the group's teaching activities.
